As an interior designer, you're amazing at transforming homes. You've got a creative eye and perhaps are wary of getting someone to capture your project so you decide to do it yourself. Let me help you overcome some common mistakes.
Mobile Phone Photography
Let's be honest, smartphone cameras take great pictures and have some pretty impressive specs.
But here's the thing: even with the latest smartphone tech, there's still a gulf between a decent snapshot and a truly captivating image. In the world of Interior Design, where first impressions are everything, you need more than just a "good" photo. You need images that scream "luxury," "craftsmanship," and "hire me now!"
While it may be tempting to take photos yourself, a professional photographer has the skills and equipment to capture your designs in the best possible light. Investing in professional photography is an investment in your brand and your business.
Poor Lighting
It's so tempting to look at a room and put all the lights on but this doesn't work for every style and I'd go as far as to say that unless you've got feature lights that the whole design pivots on...turn them off. You can alter the brightness on even the simplest mobile app but trying to correct that yellow cast that comes off of indoor lights can be a nightmare.
When you hire a professional interior photographer they know exactly how to work with even the most over cast of days and correct in photoshop.
Cluttered Staging
You need your design to breathe. Over styling and staging can detract and distract. I often suggest some fresh flowers but go too far and they can overpower the room.
The same goes with kitchen staging. You don't need to display the function of a dining table by laying a full dinner service out. A few strategically placed objects can give you those finishing touches that compliment the design.
Lack of Post-Processing
It's so important to have a grasp of the basics of post processing. No image is perfect when first taken. There may be an imbalance of light, marks on the wall that weren't there when you last visited and the dreaded electric cable that you forgot to hide. Just learning a few basic skills in photoshop can mean the difference between a nice image and a great image.
So what's the take away from this? Take your time, don't assume that just because your phone is the latest model you will get perfect results, learn some new skills and if in doubt .... call me!
